After the SovietâChina split in the early 1960s, the WIDF journal published much less material about China. In the 1960sâ1980s, it was the Eastern European and other countries that were assumed to follow the socialist direction were used as examples of the positive transformation of womenâs lives, and of women gaining access to their rights. Issue 3 from 1965 published an article by Renata Urban about the promotion of women in the GDR (ZM 1965 3:16â17). In a 1981 journal issue, Elena Lagadinova discussed how state socialism had led to great changes in the status of women in Bulgaria (ZM, 1981, 4: 24â26). Finally, a number of articles on countries outside Europe that were considered to be âbuilding socialismâ were also published. For example, issue 1 from 1966 was specifically dedicated to womenâs rights, and published graphical material about the achievements of womenâs rights in the DRV under the title: âThe numbers that speak for themselvesâ (ZM 1966 1: 30â33).
The ideas expressed in the WIDF journal were repeated in many other WIDF materials. For example, a package aimed for distribution to participants of the commission number 3 (dedicated to development) at the 1975 WIDF World Congress in Berlin stated:
the experiences of the socialist countries show that constitutional principles can become reality; men and women have the right and indeed the duty to participate in the economic, political, social and cultural life of their countries irrespective of sex, nationality, race, religion and social class. An expression of this is the large proportion of women elected to government.
